How is Alpha delivered in prisons? How is the Alpha course delivered in prisons? The Alpha course is presented to inmates by trained Alpha volunteers with endorsements of their congregational leadership and who have participated in the course themselves.
Scheduling is flexible, in consideration of the prison's daily schedule of operations and the availability of volunteers. A 2-hour introduction program may precede the course, which is open to all inmates. The introduction consists of video presentations explaining the course.
From this introduction inmates make application to attend. The number of participants admitted to the course will depend on the size of the room allocated for Alpha .
During Weeks 7 or 8 of the course, Alpha presents a "Holy Spirit Day". It is imperative that this event be held but there are several formats in which it can take place. Generally speaking a full day is needed and a meal with the volunteers is desirable. Flexibility however will be the considered in setting this time apart from the normal routine of the facility.
The course must be taught once a week for 11 weeks in 2-hour sessions following the established Alpha pattern, which consist of the following weekly subjects:
1. Who is Jesus? 2. Why Did Jesus Die? 3. How Can I Be Sure of My Faith? 4. Why and How should I Read the Bible? 5. Why and How Do I Pray? 6. How Does God Guide Us? 7. Holy Spirit Day
- What Does the Holy Spirit Do?
- How Can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?
8. How Can I Resist Evil? 9. Why and How Should We Tell Others? 10. Does God Heal Today? 11. What About the Church? 12. How Can I Make the Most of the Rest of My Life?
What are the costs? There is no cost to the facility. Cost of materials for one participant is approximately $8.00. Donations from interested churches and individuals usually defray these expenses.
