The
God Who Changes Lives.
Neglect;
poverty; physical and sexual abuse; drug and alcohol
addiction; prostitution and drug dealing, the story of
every inmate has at least one, usually more of these
elements. Experts in the fields of sociology, social
work, mental health, law and politics all offer
opinions and solutions, but at the end of the day the
problems of crime seem to get worse. Politicians know
that votes can be garnered from a “get tough on
crime” platform. So the familiar “lock
‘em up and throw
away the key” approach is usually all they have
to offer.
But
God . . .
Come
with me into prison and meet J, an intelligent young
man in his twenties whose life was blighted by all the
socio-economic factors we have just mentioned. His
life was going nowhere, he had no hope, but in prison
he met Christ, he is rejoicing in sins forgiven, the
hurt and pain in his life has been healed. He is
avidly reading and studying scripture, growing in
grace knowledge and making plans to go to Bible School
on his release.
N
was saved three months ago, he is delighted at the
fact that God is real and has been answering his
simple prayers about every day needs and issues.
The
story of these two men can be multiplied over and over
in every prison you care to name. Where the experts
fail in bringing about long-term inner change, God, by
His power succeeds in doing.
The
second Connecticut Prison Conference
held on August 14, in Glastonbury was another vivid
reminder of the power of God to change lives. Both
speakers, Chaplain Mike Kropman and Kim Rivera told
their stories of how they came to know Christ when
they were in prison in the depths of hopelessness and
despair. They were living reminders to all of us that God changes lives.
In
each of their cases God used ordinary individuals,
such as those of us who go regularly into prison, to
reach them with His love. This fact encouraged all of
us to keep on doing what God has called us to do in
prison ministry. Read the full report of the
conference on our website www.free-inside.com.
